What is typing?

Typing is the action of writing or giving input to a computer or typewriter by pressing keys on the keyboard. As typing is equivalent to pen or pencil mastery of the computer keyboard has become mandatory in many works. Computer keyboard contains various types of keys like Alphanumeric Keys, Punctuation Keys, Special Keys, Numeric Keypad, Home Keys, Guide Keys etc.

What is a typing speed tool?

Knowledge of typing skill has become inevitable today. To obtain necessary typing skill, correct positioning of fingers is more important on the keyboard. Successful keyboarding techniques help the learner to work speedily to attain targets. Now-a-days, the use of typing software is common to learn keyboarding skills and develop typing speed.

Typing speed test is a tool which is used to test your typing speed of a person and helps to improve their speed of typing with properly designed lessons and various timing tests to check their speed and accuracy.

Why do we have to learn speed typing?

  • Now, the use of computers is an inevitable one in all work, so we have to know the proper keyboard typing to efficiently use computers. It also increases our work ability and more output by saving our precious time.
  • More jobs are available for well versed typewriters in all fields, for that speed and accurate typing is an important key factor to crack the interview among more competitors.

How Accuracy and Speed is calculated in typing?

Accuracy:

  • Accuracy is calculated by no. of correctly typed words divided by total no. of typed words, then multiplied by 100.
  • Accuracy is a vital factor for typing any content because a simple mistake leads to incorrect output or failure output of our work.
  • Accurate typing of data is more important than speed typing. First we have to focus on typing using appropriate fingers with more accuracy after that focus to increase the speed.

Speed:

  • Typing speed is an important key factor for a good typing skill, speed of typing is measured by many methods like WPM, KPM.
  • WPM( Word Per Minute) is defined as the number of words typed per minute, and ignoring wrongly typed words or letters. KPM(Keystroke Per Minute) is defined as the number of keys pressed per minute in a particular time period.
  • Speed and accuracy are like two eyes, both are very important to attain accurate speed typing skill. Typing above 40 WPM with 96% accuracy is an average typing speed and 50 wpm above is a good one.
  • Suppose if you learn to type 60 or 70 wpm is really superb , because it’s very near to super typing speed typing skill to become a good typewriter.
  • World fastest typing speed is 216 wpm which was recorded by Stella Pajunas-Garnand from Chicago in1946 using QWERTY keyboard layout.

How to achieve high speed typing skill?

  • Achieving more speed with accuracy needs consistent  practice minimum 30 minutes twice a day.
  • Concentration in typing words  is more important for accurate and speed typing.
  • Press the keys with soft touch and do not put pressure.
  • While typing, rest your fingers on the home row.
  • While typing, release the key immediately as soon as you depress it. If a particular key is not released quickly and held down for a long time, the key will repeatedly type the same character.
  • Do not look at the keyboard, while typing the keys on the keyboard
  • Try to maintain a periodic interval while typing. It means pressing the keys with an equal gap of time.
  • Press the keys only with the fingers assigned for them
  • While pressing a key, speak the requisite alphabet or number whatever may be the case in your mind quietly.
  •  Relax, don’t hasten while learning process
  • At initial stages, mistakes are bound to happen. So, maintain patience.
  • keep consistent  time with your practice.
  • Speed and accuracy, both are equally important. You should not sacrifice accuracy for speed. You want to master a computer keyboard, undertake repeated practice of typewriting words, sentences, passages and figures without looking at the keyboard.
  • To keep an eye on your speed and accuracy, set a daily target and practice. Track your performance continuously in the form of a chart until you achieve the goal.
  • See the above picture it shows the respective fingers for all alphabetical letters, learning proper fingers for letters and numbers is the first key for achieving speed typing.
  • In lesson one we learn to type the home rows with proper fingers, at first we have to know the home row keys i.e., ASDFGHJKL; these are home row keys.
  • Did you ever notice any variation in the keys F and J in your keyboard? If not, have a look at how those two keys differ from other keys on your keyboard. That variation or little bump denotes that we have to return our fingers to those keys after typing other keys.
